Voters‘ referendum effort backed by 305,000 Missourians will continue to move toward November ballot
Jefferson City, MO — Today, a Cole County Judge dismissed Maggard v. State of Missouri, declining to block implementation of HB1 at this stage of the proceedings. The case is subject to appeal to the Western District.
By unwisely dismissing the case on standing, Judge Stumpe is out of alignment with 100 years of judicial precedent, common sense, and his own language in the ballot summary case.
“This is not the final word. More than 305,000 Missourians have already demanded a vote, the Constitution is on the side of voters, and no single ruling can override the right of the people to decide their own representation, said Richard von Glahn, Executive Director of People Not Politicians Missouri. “This fight is far from over, and voters will ultimately have the final say.”
The Secretary of State’s own data confirms that the referendum has met the required threshold statewide and in the necessary congressional districts. Despite this, officials have suggested the review process could continue until July. This delay only adds to the tactics of obstruction politicians have used all along to silence the voice of the people. The measure continues moving toward final certification and placement on the November ballot.
