ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – There is new reaction to an attempt by Missouri leaders to prevent you, the voters, from having a say on the state’s new congressional map.
Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has filed a lawsuit arguing the impending referendum to put the change on the ballot usurps the legislature’s power and violates the Constitution.
The lawsuit states there’s nothing in the Missouri Constitution saying redistricting can be challenged.
However, People Not Politicians is gathering signatures and pointing to the part in the constitution that states the people can “approve or reject by referendum any act of the general assembly.”
In just one month, People Not Politicians has collected over 100,000 signatures from Missourians who want to put the new congressional maps to a vote.
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Denny Hoskins said those signatures don’t count, as he just now approved the petition. People Not Politicians is contesting that, as well as the attorney general’s lawsuit.
If they can get the issue to the ballot, it would ensure the maps won’t change until at least 2028.
