Members of a nonpartisan coalition joined forces Tuesday and spoke out against Congressional Redistricting in Missouri. Governor Mike Kehoe announced Friday he called for a Special Session to change Missouri’s Congressional District Map.
Members of a group called, People Not Politicians-Missouri, said there was a growing statewide grassroots network focusing on opposing the Governor’s redistricting plan. Opponents of Governor Kehoe’s redistricting plan said it would not only change Congressional District Lines, but it would also silence the voices of many Missourians. They said the Governor’s new Congressional Map would allow politicians to decide elections, not the people. Missouri NAACP President Nimrod Chapel is a member of the People Not Politicians-Missouri coalition.
Chapel said, “This is not necessarily a Democrat or Republican issue. I’ll tell you what this is. This is a citizenship issue. If you want to protect your democracy and you want to make sure we have the ability to continue living this State as free people with a voice paid for by the tax dollars we give, then the time is now. I think that we ought to find an initiative that talks about that.”
Governor Kehoe posted on X, “It’s the responsibility of the State Legislature to ensure that values of Missouri families and communities are represented in Washington, D.C. and in our State.”
The Special Session was scheduled to begin Wednesday at noon at the State Capitol Building.
The next Congressional Election in Missouri is in November 2026.
